    2014-02-19

AMU seeks to promote giving and receiving within cooperation, in a reciprocal way rather than in a single-handed direction. Solidarity, seen as being next to another person in order to share their problems and help them find a solution, leads to a reciprocal bond: it comes from the attitude of listening to someone else, of receiving him/her as (s)he is, until (s)he feels understood and chooses to share his/her own ideas and skills. In this free exchange of giving and receiving, everyone gives and receives and people’s skills are promoted. The reciprocal trait of cooperation allows the projects to be built with everyone’s collaboration, which is an enriching experience for everyone.

The way AMU operates within the area of cooperation has sought to follow the “Millennium Development Goals” (MDGs) defined in the United Nations Millennium Declaration (New York, 2000), particularly the first two goals:

    • Erradicate extreme poverty and hunger
    • Provide access to primary education in every country in the world
AMU has joined efforts to channel material and financial resources to Angola, within on-site projects co-financed by Portuguese public and private institutions, which attempt to respond to needs in the Education sector.

AMU has developed projects mostly in the sectors of Education, Teacher Training and Childcare.

  • Project "Uma escola nos Andes" - Peru / Ongoing Project
    2014-04-28

Bolívar is a city of 2.500 inhabitants, located in the heart of the Peru Andes at 3.200 meters above the level of the sea. Its territory hosts 30 little communities spread across a very wide area with difficult access.

We are at the La Libertad region, in its extreme east frontier. Here people typically live from agriculture: some potato culture, hay for the animals and also some dairy cattle. Some people find jobs in public service but the majority of the adult population searches for work in the coast. Men search for work as farmers and women apply for domestic service in some family houses. The consequence of this is that a whole generation practically does not exist in Bolívar; the children live with their grandfathers.

This project comes from a proposal from the parish of Bolivar. It has long been realized that many children do not attend public school, whether for the distance involved, or many families needs that their children work the land.

  • Project Gorongosa - Mozambique / Ongoing Project
    2014-04-30

Gorongosa is a district in the province of Sofala, Mozambique. In order to tackle the very high level of illiteracy, specially among women, the program is aimed at creating model classes for women where the focus of the program is the girl and the community leader. After their training, the participants in these model classes will be able to educate and train other members of their communities, be it for literacy as well as other arts and crafts that can help local sustainability.

AMU participates in this project by creating 20 of the open spaces aimed at hosting the "Centros de Alfabetização de adultos - escolas 'sem paredes'" for adult education. Additionally, AMU also will create a workshop - "Oficina de Sapiência modelo" to host the training in various arts and crafts.
